How do I pick the right handbag?
Because we can't stash all of our must-haves in our pockets, this is a common question I get asked. With so many styles, colours, shapes, prices and materials, it's no wonder we become overwhelmed in the store when looking at hundreds on display. When deciding on the perfect handbag, the most important things to think about are style, size, structure, and season.
Your handbag doesn't have to match your outfit. As is the case with shoes, use your handbag as contrast and a statement. A tan Oroton briefcase can add a touch of flair to a black or navy suit. A nice black Mimco clutch brings polish to a bright print ensemble.
The most important rules to remember are:
- Match the bag to the occasion; Casual bag with the casual outfit or occasion and formal bag with the formal outfit or occasion.
- The size of the handbag should never overwhelm your frame. This means taller gals can carry most sizes, while petites should stick with the smaller styles.
- Straps should not be so long that the bag hits your hip or below. An oversized low-slung bag can make even the most stylish of women come off as dumpy, causing your posture to tilt.
Once you've identified a style and size range, seek out structure. Look for a defined shape that will hold even when filled to capacity. Most often good structure can only be found with good material and even better construction. Resist the urge to pack everything you own into your handbag. The kitchen sink really doesn't have a use outside the home. All you really need is everything you can fit into your Borne Naked™ Handbag Liner. That way you can be assured your bag will not become too heavy and will not loose structure.
How do I look after my handbags?
The following tips will help keep your handbags looking as good as possible. A handbag is an important investment so make sure you look after them. If you've chosen the style to suit you, you can continue to add to your growing collection over the seasons if you follow these tips:
- Place your unused handbag in a breathable dust bag for storage. When you invest in quality handbags, most come with the dust bag.
- Keep your handbags looking new by rubbing them down regularly with a damp cloth on imitation leathers or leather cleaning cremes (available at most good handbag or department stores). For cloth bags, use a lint brush to remove dirt from the exterior.
- Use leather protection (also available from good handbag or department stores) on leather handbags to protect them from wear and tear and keep them clean.
- For stains on fabric bags use a little dishwashing detergent to remove stubborn stains.
- To clean bag interiors, gently pull out the lining and use a lint brush or a small dust buster vacuum to remove debris. Of course your Borne Naked™ Handbag Liner will help to protect the inside of your bag.
- Only handle your bag with clean hands. Residue from hand lotion can cause handles to discolour.
